Inadequate nutrition and safety are two primary reasons many people move into nursing homes. Like the rest of the population seniors prefer to live in their own homes for as long as possible. Meals on Wheels delivers a hot, nutritious noon meal to homebound people age 60 + each weekday. More than just a meal, the program provides a friendly, familiar face at the doors of homebound people every day. Family members and friends are rest assured, when they cannot check up on their loved ones, the Meals on Wheels volunteer will be there for them. And for the tax paying public, Meals on Wheels saves valuable financial resources. The cost to deliver Meals on Wheels to one senior for one year is $2,000. Placement in a state funded nursing facility costs the taxpayer over $40,000 per placement. Meals on Wheels is a valuable lifeline for many people who have difficulty advocating for themselves.
Applicants must be Wichita residents age 60 or over. They must be homebound and have difficulty cooking for themselves and have no one regularly available to cook for them or take them out for dinner.
Meals are delivered between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. each weekday. You must be at home to accept the meal. Meals will not be left outside or with neighbors. Weekend meals are delivered to those who are most isolated and at risk of nursing home placement.
Absolutely! Many people recovering from surgery or illness use the program until their strength returns.
Simply call ahead of time if you know you are not going to be home to receive a meal.
Clients receive frozen or shelf stable meals before holidays when Senior Services is closed. On rare occasions inclement weather keeps our drivers from delivering meals. Anticipating such events, we supply every Meals on Wheels client with frozen or shelf stable meals to be used when road conditions do not allow regular delivery.
Call 267-0122 to schedule an assessment. Referrals for services come from many sources: doctors, social workers, neighbors, relatives or friends. You may also call to set up service for yourself.

At this time of uncertainty Senior Services appreciates the outpouring of support our community has given to help homebound, isolated seniors. We are working hard to process all requests from potential volunteers. We must do thorough background checks before allowing new people to take delivery routes. This takes a little time for us to complete. To help immediately financial support is needed to continue to support both Meals on Wheels and Roving Pantry clients. Whether $5.00 or $50.00 all donations are needed and appreciated. Please note “where needed most” in the field for donations.
