A Valuable Lifeline

Inadequate nutrition and safety are two primary reasons many people move into nursing homes. Like the rest of the population seniors prefer to live in their own homes for as long as possible. Meals on Wheels delivers a hot, nutritious noon meal to homebound people age 60 + each weekday. More than just a meal the program provides a friendly, familiar face at the doors of homebound people every day. Family members and friends are rest assured when they cannot check up on their loved ones, the Meals on Wheels volunteer will be there for them. And for the tax paying public, Meals on Wheels saves valuable financial resources. The cost to deliver Meals on Wheels to one senior for one year is $1,900.  Placement in a state funded nursing facility costs the taxpayer up to $40,000 per placement. Meals on Wheels is a valuable lifeline for many people who have difficulty advocating for themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who is eligible to receive Meals on Wheels?

Applicants must be Wichita residents age 60 or over. They must be homebound and unable to cook for themselves and have no one regularly available to cook for them or take them out for dinner.

  • When are meals delivered?

Meals are delivered between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. each weekday. You must be at home to accept the meal. Meals will not be left outside or with neighbors. Weekend meals are delivered to those who are most isolated and at risk of nursing home placement.

  • Can I receive Meals on Wheels on a temporary basis?

Absolutely! Many people recovering from surgery or illness use the program until their strength returns.

  • What if I’m not going to be home to receive the meal?

Simply call ahead of time if you know you are not going to be home to receive a meal.

  • What about holidays and snowstorms? Do you deliver?

Clients receive frozen or shelf stable meals before holidays when Senior Services is closed. Very rarely, the weather keeps our drivers from delivering meals. Anticipating such events, we supply every Meals on Wheels client with frozen or shelf stable meals to be used when road conditions do not allow regular delivery.

  • How do I apply?

Call 267-0122 to schedule an assessment. Referrals for service come from many sources: doctors, social workers, neighbors, relatives or friends. Or you may call to set up service for yourself.
