A Valuable Lifeline

Inadequate nutrition and safety are two primary reasons many people move into nursing homes. Like the rest of the population seniors prefer to live in their own homes for as long as possible. Meals on Wheels delivers a hot, nutritious mid-day meal to homebound or disabled people each weekday. More than just a meal, the program provides a friendly face at the doors of homebound people. Family members and friends are reassured, when they cannot check up on their loved ones, the Meals on Wheels volunteer will be there for them. And for the tax paying public, Meals on Wheels saves valuable financial resources. The cost to deliver a meal to one senior for one year is $2,000. Placement in a state funded nursing facility costs the taxpayer over $40,000 per placement. Meals on Wheels is a valuable lifeline for many people who have difficulty advocating for themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who is eligible to receive Meals on Wheels?

Applicants must be Wichita residents who are typically age 60 or over. Individuals under age 60, and qualify for the physical disability waiver, can apply. They must be homebound and have difficulty cooking for themselves and have no one regularly available to cook for them or take them out for dinner.

  • When are meals delivered?

Meals are delivered between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. each weekday. You must be at home to accept the meal. Meals will not be left outside or with neighbors. Weekend meals are delivered to those who are most isolated and at risk of nursing home placement.

  • Can I receive Meals on Wheels on a temporary basis?

Absolutely! Many people recovering from surgery or illness use the program until their strength returns.

  • Can I cancel meals for appointments?

Simply call ahead of time if you know you are not going to be home to receive a meal.

  • What about holidays and snowstorms? Do you deliver?

Clients receive frozen or shelf stable meals before holidays when Senior Services is closed. On rare occasions inclement weather keeps our drivers from delivering meals. Anticipating such events, we supply every Meals on Wheels client with frozen or shelf stable meals to be used when road conditions do not allow regular delivery.

  • How do I apply?

Call 267-0122 to start the process. Referrals for services come from many sources: doctors, social workers, neighbors, relatives or friends. You may also call to set up service for yourself.
