Senior Services is a non-profit, non-government, private charity. Your donation helps us keep Wichita-area seniors happy, healthy and living in their own homes.

The Need Is Great…You Can Help

A quarter of the Kansas population is 60 or older, and that number — and their needs — grow daily.

Our partial funding from federal, state and local sources does not.

These partners are valued and crucial, but they can’t meet the need alone. We rely on caring people like you to help us sustain and grow our services. Our programs address the three biggest threats of aging: isolation, hunger and loss of independence.

Senior Services accepts estate gifts, memorials, charitable foundation distributions, income residuals from investments, stocks, and other forms of planned giving.

Forced retirement and the passing of loved ones puts seniors at risk of life-limiting social isolation. In Kansas, 26% of people over 60 live alone.

Did You Know?

The health risks of prolonged isolation are equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Social isolation and loneliness may shorten a person’s lifespan by as many as 15 years.

People Aren’t Meant to Be Alone

The negative consequences of social isolation can include:

Greater risk of heart disease and stroke
Cognitive decline (50% increased chance of developing dementia)
Anxiety and depression
Increased nursing home and ER admissions

While you may associate Senior Services with Meals on Wheels, our ultimate goal is to prevent homebound hunger before it starts. Our senior center and employment programs are the first line of defense.

Health & Nutrition Programs

In Kansas, 19% of people over 60 experience some form of food insecurity. That risk increases for homebound individuals — who often face crippling social isolation as well.

Did You Know?

Meals on Wheels saves valuable financial resources while helping people stay in their own homes. It costs only $2,000 to deliver a meal to one person for a full year, compared to the $40,000 taxpayer cost for one state-funded nursing facility placement.

Delivering More Than Just a Meal

Meals on Wheels delivers nourishing weekday meals and a vital lifeline to homebound Wichita seniors. For many of our clients (recipients), their volunteer is the only person they see all day, and that friendly face at the door means everything.

Community Meals (formerly called Friendship Meals) use the same menu as Meals on Wheels, but are served in a group setting at senior and community centers across Wichita. These gatherings provide crucial social connections and a nutritious hot meal in a welcoming, inclusive setting.

We also partner with Wichita Animal Action League (WAAL) to provide pet food and pet care assistance for Meals on Wheels clients. For many seniors, their beloved pet is their primary companion — but a lack of resources can threaten separation. The PetPals program works to keep seniors and their pets together at home.

Help Us Keep Seniors Safe & Food-Secure

Together, we can keep seniors out of nursing homes and their pets from shelters. Meals on Wheels in Wichita serves approximately 800 people every day.

A Little Goes a Long Way

$60 = lunches for one senior and their pet for one week
$110 = 12 months of programs and events at a senior center
$175 = job development services to find one person a new job
