Community Meals
A hot meal shared together builds connection and belonging. The Community Meals program brings nourishment, companionship, and a welcoming place to gather for older adults in Wichita.
Essential Meals & Meaningful Connections
Formerly called Friendship Meals, Community Meals use the same menu as Meals on Wheels but are served in a group setting at community and senior centers across Wichita.
This program not only provides well-balanced weekday meals (for some seniors, the primary or only nutritious meal they have each day), but also opportunities to socialize and enjoy activities together.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is eligible to receive Community Meals?
Applicants must be Wichita residents aged 60+. The spouse of an eligible participant may also receive meals, regardless of age or health status.
When are meals provided?
Meals are provided Monday through Friday, with exceptions for holidays, inclement weather, or events planned at the meal site. These will be communicated well in advance.
Holidays include New Year’s Day, MLK Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day (Observed), Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day + Friday, and Christmas Day.
Do recipients have to pay for meals?
No. Meals are provided at no cost to participants. Voluntary, confidential donations are welcome from those who can support the program, but a donation is never required. Meals will not be denied if no donation is made.
What is the experience at the meal site like?
Each site is supported by dedicated Senior Services staff and volunteers. Once approved to receive meals, participants will receive specific instructions on where and when to gather.
Upon arrival, participants check in and may be seated while they wait for the meal to be served. These gatherings are a welcoming opportunity to connect with fellow participants and get to know the staff.
While each site has its own routine, the shared goal of the Community Meals program is to create a comfortable, inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone.
How do you know I’m coming to eat?
Once you’re approved for the program, your name is added to the roster at your meal site. On your first visit, you’ll complete a calendar indicating the dates you plan to attend. This process is updated on a rolling basis to help us prepare enough food for everyone.
Can someone else join me to eat a meal who isn’t approved for Community Meals?
Yes. If you know someone plans to join you, please let the Community Meals site manager know in advance. Guests under age 60 are welcome to attend but will be asked to pay a set cost for the meal. Site managers can provide the current guest meal price.
